Review of The Public Enemy (1931) by Jon P — 26 Jun 2011
Helping to set a template for future Gangster films and featuring a charismatic Cagney in the role that led him to stardom, 'The Public Enemy' is undoubtedly a noteworthy cinematic achievement and a true classic of its genre.
Although the storytelling is somewhat predictable, the film boasts plenty of unforgettable scenes, superb acting and a 'rise and fall' narrative which remains highly entertaining even by modern standards.
Rough, brutal and beautifully shot, this early Gangster flick is unavoidably engaging and very unlikely to disappoint.
