Review of The Proposition (2005) by Paul R — 22 Jan 2012
This Aussie western is dark, dirty and very gritty. In a very rural Australia in the late nineteenth century a gang of brothers are held responsible for the attack on a farm and the rape and murder of the family.
Ray Winstone is Captain Stanley who captures 2 of younger brothers whilst the eldest brother ringleader is still at large. Guy Pierce is Charlie Burns who is tasked with finding and killing his eldest brother to save his close younger brother Mike from the gallows.
This is not the glamorous and colourful westerns of America, this is dirty, gritty, violent and bloody. Although a violent film this is by no means used for shock or as a gimmick it is justified and drives the mood and tone of the film perfectly.
The combination of a superb soundtrack, interesting story and beautiful cinematography all come together to make a rewarding Australian Drama you certainly won't forget in a hurry.
