An absolute classic of the genre and in some ways turns it on its head - the Australian outback giving us a harsh, savage wilderness in place the desolate expansive beauty of the American Mid-West - demythifying the West in the same way Unforgiven did over a decade before.
'The Proposition' is entirely its own film though.
