Review of The Proposal (2009) by Sean W — 21 Nov 2011

Most romantic comedies today are just not that funny and not that romantic, they lack chemistry and characters that matter. However Sandra Bullock and Ryan Reynolds create fun quirky characters who are interesting, funny and share a chemistry that is often missing in films like this. Yes the movie is somewhat formulaic, yes its pretty easy to predict whats going to happen and yes despite all this, its still a fun movie to watch.

Playing a corporate executive with ice water pumping through her veins, Bullock is able to make this prissy, pompous character likable by giving us glimpses of vulnerability that allow us to identify with her character. Reynolds character is perfectly developed to be the flame that melts through the ice, showing us bit by bit the more human side of Bullock's character.

The pace of the movie is good, the gags are funny though not hysterical and movie develops a charm as it moves along that makes you want to like it. In the end while far from perfect The Proposal provides some good laughs, a little romance and fun viewing experience. I can honestly recommend this one highly. It gets a solid B.
