YOU FORGOT TO MAKE THE CHARACTERS FALL IN LOVE, PETE.
Seriously. There is ONE scene of them truly bonding (in the bedroom, while Reynolds sleeps on the floor) and a naked run in between two hot people which would probably cause some sexual tension. But that's IT. Sexual tension. Not falling in love with someone who has verbally/emotionally abused you and everyone around you for the past few years. I can't get over that.
Otherwise, it's just totally formulaic bullshit ("No dad, I don't want to join the family business! I want to write books and touch the world with WORDS!") that would have benefitted from less Alaska and more New York. It's not offensively bad like Chaos Theory, but this is certainly a film that does not benefit from even the most minutely critical of a consumer eye.
