Review of The Prophecy (1995) by James C — 06 Jul 2007
You know- I really liked this movie. I like this movie.
I remember when it was supposed to some out- years and years ago under a different name... something like Heaven's War. Fangoria magazine had lots of talk about it. Then it was shelved- for I think a year... those years Hollywood was afraid of moody horror cuz it wasn't the first movei held for awhile... The Dark Half and Warlock were also in the same boat.
This movie was methodical... sometimes slow. And that is what made it an instant classic... While the rest of fly over America was screaming for the next Cliched horror franchise sequel this came out and just sorta floated along.
I would say this movie is more of a Suspense movie... and even then sometimes it is a character study or an exposition on Religion.
This was one of those movie that if you saw it when it came out you knew you were watching something different- it sorta became a myth in itself and we all talked fondly of it's placement in Horror history.
I watched it again recently and found myself drifting a bit in the middle and thought maybe it could have used a bit of tightening up.
The cast was superb and the writing was quite nice... I would put this movie next to my James Morrow Novels... for it's dissection- for looking at religion form another set of eyes.
Do I want to watch it all the time? No- Once every few years and I love it... Anymore and one may find that it's stardom comes from what it represented back in 95- and what we all wanted it to be.
Do I think anyone else should watch it- Oh man yes. It should be respected for its ambition... and loved for it's story.
