Review of The Prophecy (1995) by Michael C — 30 May 2008
A movie with a so-so plot and an anti-climactic ending that gets saved by some great one lilners, some awesome convention breaking, and excellent acting from Walken and Mortsensen. Plus, I'm a sucker for supernatural Christian fiction.
Every time Christopher Walken comes on screen, the scene lights up and becomes monumentally better. However, it's Viggo Mortensen who steals the show with by far the greatest Devil portrayal I've seen, playing it both cool and completely creepy, sending shivers down your spine each time he appears.
He's able to convey so much with so few words. It was nice to see a religious fiction movie that isn't the normal "Satan tries to bring about the apocalypse", instead flipping the convention.
While that is all good and original, the movie is bogged down with unappealing main characters, completely salvaging the supporting players. Also as mentioned above, the climax is sort of unsatisfying.
A pretty decent movie recommended to fans of Walken or Mortensen, and those who enjoy religious fiction.
