Review of The Prophecy (1995) by Joe J — 03 Oct 2012
There's been a war waging in the heavenly realm for centuries, and the angels are upset at God for giving a soul to man and loving mankind more than themselves, so Gabriel (Christopher Walken) heads to earth to find the soul of a man who did completely horrible things in order to give more power to the angels' side.
Meanwhile, former priest-turned-detective Thomas (Elias Koteas) is investigating the events happening, which leads to schoolteacher Katherine (Virginia Madsen) and her student Mary (Moriah Shining Dove Snyder) who has the soul of the man inside her, and is the one Gabriel is hunting for.
This is a mildly confusing film as it seems that one of the best angels in the Bible (Gabriel) is now a jealous, merciless killing machine, and the Devil (Viggo Mortensen) is actually helping mankind survive. Still, it is Christopher Walken's iconic performance that brings this film above the low-grade quality it otherwise might've had.
