Review of The Prophecy (1995) by Kane L — 07 Apr 2013
I'm going to say that overall, I liked this movie. The story was captivating, but borderline preposterous. Christopher Walken is what wins this film over for me. At first glance he looks more like an Ozzy Osbourne look-a-like, not a badass, killer angel. Too old to play the part. The black spray paint on his mop-head was not a good look for him, or for the entire movie. But looking through the terrible mop-job, and all the low-budget acting and flaws, the film was memorable and entertaining.
The Prophecy also earns credit in my book with the late addition of a young Viggo Mortenson portraying Lucifer. At the time, no one knew who he was and people probably respectfully wrote off his cameo appearance as another B-actor in a B-movie. But looking at his casting in the Prophecy movie today, his appearance seems to give this film a History of Violence appeal like when William Hurt appeared out of nowhere to finish off his brother. Not quite the same ballpark but you catch my drift.
I am a fan of Christopher Walken, but that does not mean that any film he touches I automatically add to my "like" list. He has to be on point. I like him out of his mind like in the Deer Hunter, violent and running shit like in the King of New York, rich and flirtatious like in Wayne's World 2, and randomly funny like in Pulp Fiction. Walken was convincingly able to pimp dead people, hunt down angels, and have his way with everyone and look good doing it, (despite his Ozzy, dollar-store spray paint mop job haircut).
3/5.
