Review of The Producers (1968) by Nick B — 06 May 2008
Absolutely farcical. That's really the best way to describe it. It's not dry or subtle or anything like that, it's a weird romp with bizarre characters in bizarre circumstances. The film is very theatrical, and I don't mean the subject matter.
The acting and composition show heavy influences of theater work, which works well given the plot. All the cast from the two stars to the various supporting cast is just phenomenal, with every actor bringing something to the table.
It's very different from Brook's later works, focusing more on absurd characters in a normal setting than something like "Blazing Saddles" or "History of the World" but that's not to say "The Producers" is lacking anything.
Definitely worth checking out if you're in the mood for a laugh.
