Sometimes, what's good on paper doesn't work well on the screen. This is one of those movies. I liked Julianne Moore's performance but Woody Harrelson is poorly miscast as a drunken slump and his performance is just awful.
Because he is a mean drunk, the whole subplot with Laura Dean and her social club including the women in an iron lung seem, well, like in a different movie all entirely. None of the child actors are believeable and that one daughter is so annoying, we wish Woody would give her a trip to the woodshed.
Yes, at one time, housewives did make money writing jingles for products and Moore's character did more or less support her family, but this movie just makes me wonder what the hell was the director thinking.
It's too serious to be quirky and too quirky to be serious.
