Review of The Private Lives of Pippa Lee (2009) by Cristian B — 30 Nov 2009
A funny and touching character study of a woman unraveling in her life. Director Miller does a wonderful job of juggling the tones of drama and comedy. Miller gets terrific work from her ensemble cast.
Robin Wright is front and center as Pippa Lee. She gives one of her most complex and moving performances. There are some flaws in the juggling of the story lines, but the cast and Miller's sharp dialogue are able to carry the film.
Maria Bello impresses as Pippa Lee's unstable mother. She is riveting to watch. The film is ultimately a fascinating portrait of a woman learning to take ownership of her life.
