Review of The Private Lives of Pippa Lee (2009) by Dana A — 01 May 2010
Very weird seeing Alan Arkin with hair, he looked like Chrisptoher Walken's brother. This film really wasn't that good and neither was the book. I really couldn't stand both and have no idea what made me watch the film adaptation.
The movie is pretty aimless and wonders about telling us short segments of Pippa's life and how she ended up with the life she has now, much like the book did. The problem is, I could care less about her life and the movie didn't do a good job at making feel otherwise.
It had the opportunity to be a rigorously constructed drama, given all the different characters and their life story. Instead, interesting people drift through, anecdotes are shared, attention shifts here and there, and abruptly it's time to go.
It was just awkward and I couldn't fully emmerse myself into the story or these characters. Despite hating the book at least it was a wee bit more detailed. What's really sad is that everyone involved gives a strong performance and grabs your attention but in the a blink of an eye, they're gone, you move onto the next one and by the time its over, you've forgotten about everyone.
Not well executed and far too short.
