Review of The Private Life of Sherlock Holmes (1970) by Bob W — 12 Nov 2007
Cut down from a much longer, more episodic version, this is still an underrated piece of Mr. Wilder's career. Wilder's films often have some rather large nostalgic element to them (usually only a couple of decades displaced), and he went with a very different kind for this film â?? and captured Doyle's tone expertly, injecting it with his subtle humor.
The ballet sequence is great all the way through, and the rest of the film slowly builds up to a pretty good solution and a truly touching ending. The pacing is a little uneven, but the film is sharp and authentic.
