Review of The Private Life of Sherlock Holmes (1970) by Jeff H — 18 Apr 2008
A different take on Sherlock Holmes. Wilder and writing partner I.A.L. Diamond spent years honing the script. Supposedly the script was so ironclad that whenever an actor paraphrased a line (no matter how minor), Diamond himself would yell "CUT!" and the scene would have to be redone (According to Maryl Streep in making of doc for Kramer vs.
Kramer, Woody Allen has a similar working technique - "You know, there's a coma there." (whereas Robert Benton, director of Kramer vs. Kramer, is more into improv - as of course is Dustin Hoffman).
