Review of The Princess Bride (1987) by Sarah S — 15 Jul 2012
OK, so what did I miss. My best friend has been insisting that I see this movie for the last 2 or 3 years. He said, 'Don't be fooled by the name, it is actually really good.' Well, out of boredom, I decided to watch the movie. It was a decent parody of the "Save the Princess" genre. Some of the humor is really funny, some is just passable. But there was only two or three laugh out loud moments.
The story is a classic fairy tale about two common young people, Westley and Buttercup. The two fall in love, but Westley must leave Buttercup. He promises to return, but never comes back. Years later the evil Prince Humperdinck plans to marry Buttercup. Buttercup does not love the Prince, but has to go along with his plan. Until one day, she is kidnapped by three men. The men are chased by a masked figure who turns out to be Westley. Westley is able to disable the three men and take back the princess. But now he must protect her from the evil Prince who wants her back.
Robin Wright stars as Buttercup. This was her first role, I think, and she is very good. Towards the end of the movie she is basically resigned to saying, "My Westley will save me." But overall she is good. Cary Elwes plays quite the Errol Flynn with Westley. Also look for Peter Falk as the Grandfather.
Overall, it feels like it could have been more. The parody aspect of it could have been funnier. But the movie isn't bad, just not stand out good.
"You fell victim to one of the classic blunders! The most famous of which is "never get involved in a land war in Asia," but only slightly less well-known is this: Never go in against a Sicilian when DEATH is on the line." 6.5/10.
