Review of The Princess Bride (1987) by Christopher J — 26 Dec 2013
I'm really torn about this film. It's got rave reviews and some clever subversions of the fairy tale genre.
But I just couldn't bare the lack of realism in this. I get that it's not supposed to be real, but if I struggle to keep my disbelief suspended, then the film is doing something wrong. The props look fake. The dialogue sounds fake. The world radiates fake The theme feels fake. True love? More like true retching every time I have to bare that phrase.
The writing is poor. Although I did laugh a few times, humour doesn't redeem the film's lack of pacing, decent characters, and all the (annoying) interruptions by the storyteller's grandson.
