Review of The Princess Bride (1987) by Russell Q — 16 May 2015
The 1980s was a great decade for action, sci-fi, drama, and comedy movies. I kept looking for really great fantasy movies besides The Neverending Story. What I watched was The Princess Bride. It's not just amazing, it's unique and hilarious. Director Rob Reiner finally made a film useful for all ages. Reiner has brought author William Goldman's classic book to life in a great way.
The screenplay. written by Goldman himself is unforgettable and memorable. The story begins as a grandfather (Peter Falk), is reading a childhood classic book to his sick grandson. The book is called The Princess Bride, the same title as the film. It begins with a young woman named Buttercup (a stellar breakthrough performance by Robin Wright), who falls in love with her trusted farm boy named Wesley (Cary Elwes in his career best performance), who only says three little words when she assigns him a task: "As you wish.".
After Wesley left on his ship, there were rumors of him killed by the Dread Pirate Roberts. Buttercup then reluctantly agrees to marry the evil Prince Humperdinck (Chris Sarandon), who she does not love.
