Review of The Prince of Egypt (1998) by Zac S — 19 Mar 2013
"The Prince of Egypt" is a well made animated epic, with lush, detailed backgrounds, a story that's tight, an excellent soundtrack and performances that are just as good. Every detail has been considered and planned out, from the colour palettes (which are adapted depending on the mood of the scene) to the details on the Egyptian buildings (there is a dream sequence that is animated to look like moving Egyptian art that is particularly well made).
There are numerous crowd shots where thousands of characters are moving that are well done and the movie blends the soundtrack and songs seamlessly into the story, making it enjoyable for children and adults.
The voice acting is also very good and there are some subtle choices that work very well (such as the casting of Val Kilmer as both "Moses" and "God"). The film does not feel like a Disney knockoff despite the songs because it lacks the talking animals or funny sidekicks that are often seen in animated films.
There is humour in the film but it's a dramatic scene that has some serious ideas and themes to it. It's a great film, whether it's a part of your faith or not. (Dvd, July 15th, 2012).
