Review of The Prestige (2006) by Kevin L — 23 Dec 2014
One of my favorite films and certainly my favorite by Christopher Nolan. I just adore everything about this film. It's just such a great, mind bending puzzle full of emotion and provocative messages.
I love the moral ambiguity of the main characters. You never know who it is you're supposed to root for until you finish the 5th or 6th viewing, and even then, it still makes you question whether or not it even counts as a character we're meant to root for.
I especially love Nolan's direction, and how it evokes the works of Terrence Malick as well as Film Noir. There's something about his voice overs that really helps give the film a certain atmosphere of being so close to the answers yet further away from them as well.
The ending, I guess, can be disappointing for some, but unlike Nolan's other works, where the exposition get's in the way of the meaning, this film manages to suck you into it's message perfectly with the answer's given to you.
It really catches you off guard. All in all, a fanatstic film that I will continue to claim as my second favorite film.
