Review of The Poughkeepsie Tapes (2007) by Breitm3Y3R. — 15 Aug 2008
Wow. The Poughkeepsie Tapes is a mockumentary film of a ficticious serial killer know as the Water Street Butcher who has consistently been several steps ahead of the law, thus leading them to a closet full of tapes that depict many, many hours of sadistic and brutal killings, scenes of tortures, and the intense dreadful buildup to a person's demise.
Several experts are strewn throughout the film, explaining the motives and the impressive work of this killer and how he's managed to fool everyone time and time again, while offering their own insights and observations into what he is doing.
This was a very cleverly done film that IS definitely going to be too much for several people. Even I found myself being chilled to the bone at several points throughout this movie. The Poughkeepsie Tapes is the next level of terror.
Minimal amount of blood and visual effects were used in this film, thus it relied much heavier upon buildup of tension and scenes of sheer horror. I loved this film a lot and can only wonder why the crew behind this would waste their time on a remake to [REC] (Quarantined) instead of exploring new ideas like they did with this.
Truly frightening film. It's not torture porn. Torture Porn is a fake term that only idiots like the reviewer under me use. This is just plain horror. Stay till the end of the credits if you dare.
