Review of The Post (2017) by Jeremiah C — 20 Dec 2017
The Post tells the story of the unlikely partnership between The Washington Post's Katharine Graham (Streep), the first female publisher of a major American newspaper, and editor Ben Bradlee (Hanks), as they race to catch up with The New York Times to expose a massive cover-up of government secrets that spanned three decades and four U.S. Presidents. The two must overcome their differences as they risk their careers - and their very freedom - to help bring long-buried truths to light.
Overall, watching Hanks and Streep power the screen together, and bring life to the real people of the Washington Post's massive government cover-up, is a pleasure, as well as Spielberg behind the camera directing. Overall, The Post is heavy Oscar-bait, which is something it deserves, because screenwriters Josh Singer (Spotlight) and Liz Hannah deliver an amazing script that makes The Post, feel like a Best Picture film.
