Review of The Post (2017) by Richard S — 26 Jul 2018
The Post tells the story of Katherine Graham and Ben Bradlee. Katherine was the first female publisher of The Washington Post and was struggling to be recognised in the male orientated world of newspaper journalism, Ben was the editor of the newspaper who was always fighting to uncover the big story that would take the newspaper to a national level but was always left behind by the New York Times. Their big chance occurs when papers showing evidence of a government cover up referring to America's involvement with Vietnam dating back several administrations is passed to them once The New York Times is taken out of the picture by the Nixon administration. The film then follows the struggle to get together a story and the debate over whether it should be published or not as it puts the reporters and newspaper at risk of civil action.
It's an interesting story in the lead up to the Watergate Scandal which is the story most people are familiar with but as the story plays out it is a little dry and does drag a little. However, at least this recognises the role of Katherine Graham rather than All The Presidents Men which had her mentioned as a footnote.
