Review of The Post (2017) by Howard R — 05 Feb 2018
Post Trumpmatic Stress.
If you ever wondered how good Spielberg really is, see The Post. Leveraging his anti-Trump animus, it took him less than a year to put together this tour de force, in which he makes the cinematic equivalent of drying paint seem like a death defying theme park ride. That he had two of the best American actors, Streep and Hanks playing Kay Graham and Ben Bradlee helps a lot, but it is the pace, the thrilling camera work, the eye for detail and the humanity that marks out the work of Spielberg at his best.
And it is right up there. You wish he had made All The President's Men, it would have been more exciting, better filmed and performed than Alan Pakula's film. The sheer craft of the writing, camera, editing and of course, the acting, it just takes the breath away. Streep is marvellous and Hanks is excellent and credible. The way the writers deal with the time, the 'lone woman discovering her voice' is wonderful, so knowing. The point that women were 'invisible' and 'unworthy' seems to be made so well, so effortlessly that it serves as a lesson to other less sophisticated films. Of course, the story is well known, but the moral in the age of Trump is clear: the press serves the governed, not the government. I could give this one six stars if I could.
