Review of The Possession (2012) by Shakib C — 06 Aug 2013
Unfortunately there's nothing to distinguish The Possession from the multitude of other horror movies with exactly the same concept. By making the possessing demon take on a Jewish context, I suppose that makes it slightly different, but it still goes through the motions of cliched scare tactics and a girl acting like an animal.
While the movie earns points for being subtly creepy, it doesn't really do anything to set itself apart - nor break out and completely freak the hell out of you (although the morgue scene did unnerve me against red lights).
There's no genre defining moments, no break out performances (although I did find myself sympathizing with Jeffrey Dean Morgan throughout) and no surprises. Perhaps it's time for horror to take a step back from the exorcism movies - or at least step away from the Scare-By-Numbers approach.
