Review of The Possession (2012) by Mike D — 19 Oct 2013
There are supernatural thrillers that are creative, unique and keep you on the edge of your seat, and then there's 'The Possession.' Ole Bornedal's low-budget horror entry boasts a plot that varies only slightly from other similar films, as it tracks a girl who is tormented by an ancient spirit contained in an old wooden box she found at a yard sale, who is having a hard enough time as it is with her parents splitting up.
Aside from an unoriginal premise, 'Possession' boasts C-list actors (Jeffrey Dean Morgan and, although she's awesome, Kyra Sedgwick) and even a Matisyahu sighting in a minor but pivotal role.
In terms of its scariness factor, 'Possession' relies on cheap thrills that have been done and done again, and although it's interesting seeing a horror movie focused on Judaism instead of the Catholic church, this doesn't help improve the movie overall.
Even the final few sequences are far from frightful. In short, there's really no need to see 'The Possession' - if you've already had the misfortune of seeing a bad "scary" movie or two, you've seen them all.
