Review of The Poseidon Adventure (1972) by Blake P — 17 Aug 2011
Wow! Luxurious cruise ship the Poseidon is on its very last voyage before it stops running. Everything goes fine, until a gigantic tidal wave tips the ship upside-down! Nobody survives except ten people, led by a courageous waiter (Hackman).
Who will be the first to die? You can say "The Poseidon Adventure" is what you could call Irwin Allen's (the guy who produces all of the disaster flicks ) follow up to another smash hit movie "Airport".
Luckily, this film is a lot better, and today is considered the best of all the disaster movies put out in the '70's. Allen made more like "The Towering Inferno", "The Swarm", and "Beyond the Poseidon Adventure" (the bomb sequel), and now he's renowned because of his brilliance.
Though Allen could have made this flick just another crowd pleasing explosion movie, instead he pulls off combining suspense and action/adventure. Pretty much every scene is super intense, and is perfect for what I would call a "nail-biting" movie.
The top-notch cast add a bunch to this movie, but you need to see it for yourself. "The Poseidon Adventure" is a crazy but fun film.
