Review of The Portrait of a Lady (1996) by Cary C — 11 Feb 2008
Nicole Kidman shines with ripening potential and deeply felt characterisation in this Jane Campion movie based on the novel by Henry James. It is an elegant almost romantic tale with plenty of twists and a sting in its tail.
Beautifully visualised and performed, although it was perhaps one too many appearances from the standard John Malkovitch villainous lover character first seen in the wonderful Dangerous Liaisons. But that does not affect the movie.
He is perfect in this role too. If you want a wonderful journey into Edwardian Venice, plus another sumptuous and stirring performance by Barbara Hershey (Lantana) then this is the movie for you. It wreaks of quality and has a mesmerizing soundtrack to boot!
