Review of The Polka King (2017) by Erica M — 21 Jan 2018
I am of Polish descent and my grandfather was in the polka scene, as he had his own polka band, and he actually knew Jan (not as friends but friendly towards each other at festivals and shows). Polka community is kind of tight-knit.
I thought the movie was great. Jack Black was fantastic. His wife Marla (really named Rhonda in real life) was an interesting character, and I enjoyed her character. Obviously I am biased because I have a background with Polka and Poland, but it was a funny film that was pretty truthful to the actual story of Jan Lewan (with a few liberties here and there).
