Although Tom Hanks and Robert Zemeckis would love this film to be a Christmas classic, a classic is the one thing it's not. In addition to a cast of cardboard characters and a mediocre plot that seems much too forced, the film tries too hard to manipulate our emotions.
The constant presence of Tom Hanks in just about every role also wears thin after a while.
