Review of The Polar Express (2004) by Cody F — 19 Nov 2018
Overly long, too sentimental, and unfortunately ugly.
Robert Zemeckis could have directed a beautiful and charming Christmas movie with The Polar Express (2004). Too bad the CGI is uncanny valley territory with dated CGI and the film is easily a half hour too long.
Tom Hanks gives wonderful performances as various characters, delivering warmth, fear, and charisma alike. His vocal work is as impressive as his subtle motion capture work. Too bad everyone else might as well have stayed home. The rest of the cast is bland much like the music.
Speaking of which, the score ranges from ripping off Edward Scissorhands' score to Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest's score. It's as odd and lazy as The Polar Express reusing old Christmas tunes in the background far too often.
This movie is a mess. I wish Zemeckis had just done it live action.
