This is the epitome of an underrated movie and probably one of the most underrated in the often brilliant Jack Nicholson catalog. He plays retired cop Jerry Black who promises the grieving parents to find the man who killed their daughter.
Oh...is this a sad film. Nicholson is sincere in his promise and even righteous but director Sean Penn observes how even sincere motives can drive someone mad. A thrilling film that is a keen observation of human belief and motivation.
