Review of The Player (1992) by Nate A — 06 Jun 2008
A quite good, post-modern "Sunset Boulevard" which offers a powerful critique of Hollywood films and the executives who take part in making them. I find certain features of Altman's style to be distracting and annoying, although it kind of worked in the context of this film - the relentless skipping from one storyline to another, the constant intertextual references, the exaggerated incorporation of typical Hollywood tropes such as in Adaptation, etc.
Its postmodern fragmentation results in an occasionally incoherent viewing experience. But on the whole the film has stayed with me for its brutal and ironic attack on film-as-entertainment.
