Review of The Player (1992) by Ali B — 13 Nov 2009
Clever, dark satire about Hollywood executives, and those who make movies. Robert Altman truly makes the film his own, rounding out the core cast with numerous cameos, using long shots coupled with medium framing to give an all-encompassing and realistic feel of self-absorbed Hollywood types.
His technique masterfully serves to alienate us from these often amoral characters, although the numerous film references interspersed throughout the picture will arouse rabid interest among movie buffs.
This is a self-referential, meta-type film, not as sharp or complex as 'Adaptation', but nonetheless rather potent. In many ways 'The Player' can be seen as the lighter flip side of 'Ivansxtc'.
