A fairly bland anime film.
The Place Promised in Our Early Days is decent anime, but it is nothing close to a real stand out. Its DVD cover features a quote naming the director ?the next Miyazaki?, but it is far from the truth. The movie has an interesting focus on landscape, but it doesn?t have a good inner focus on its character like Miyazaki. The focal point on its surroundings is interesting, and more live action movies should try to attempt the look this movie achieves. Sadly this look is to distract us from the fact that the animation is quite limited. The characters aren?t distinct enough, and many will probably be hard pressed to tell the two main boys apart. The lead girl is fine, but again the characters don?t look very appealing. Much like Spielberg has John Williams, Miyazaki has Joe Hisaishi?this movie has no real musical theme, making the underbelly feel too still.
The story is somewhat interesting, but it never creates enough solid interest because it wades in the same place for the middle duration. Other films like ?Ghost in the Shell? are just as vague about their sci-fi, but it seems much more intense and captivating.
I give this movie a 3.9 out of 10.0. I just didn?t see much point in this. The ending is good, but that only brings the rest of everything into a zone of decent. Skip it unless you like anime a lot. (Sorry Jack.).
