Review of The Place Beyond the Pines (2013) by Turner E — 13 Nov 2013
Place Beyond the Pines is, in my opinion, one of the many overrated films to come out of 2013. There certainly were a lot of positive reviews for this film when it initially came out earlier this year. Personally, I think it doesn't live up to the critical reception that surrounded it, but I still liked the film overall.
The plot of the story follows three separate, but connected storylines, each with their flaws and strengths. The first story follows Ryan Gosling's character as he descents into a life of crime to provide for his family. The second follows a cop played by Bradley Cooper who, after a traumatic event becomes involved with a corruption scandal. The final, and weakest story, follows the sons of both these men 15 years later as one uncovers the truth of their family connection. I have to admire the acting and directing of the film, as it is very well made and professionally handled; but overall the film suffers from a lack of focus and a poor resolution to its various stories. While I admire various aspects of the film, I felt as if the story was far too long and not as well developed as the writers believed it to be. Overall this is a decent film but it can come across as boring and pretentious more often than it comes across as shocking and interesting.
Final Grade: B-.
