Review of The Place Beyond the Pines (2013) by Jeremy P — 20 Jan 2014
Not quite as depressing a movie as I anticipated. I survived. I found the extreme shifts in narrative quite interesting and love it when a movie pulls that off well. I thought the first 2 acts of the film were going to be interlaced but they were completely separate.
I had no idea anything approaching the third act would be in the movie. They all have a very strong connection though so I won't quite say it felt like 3 different movies. An actor by the name of Ben Mendelsohn gave by far my favorite performance as a mechanic that befriends Ryan Gosling early on.
