Review of The Place Beyond the Pines (2013) by Donald Z — 09 Jun 2015
As I think some people have mentioned here, this movie does feel to be stretching a bit, and could've easily been made into three films or just three short films for a trilogy to better extent. Nonetheless, what is here.
.. is ok... I guess.... Except when it's not... but it has a thing every now and then that still, in the midst of all this madness, pushes it a little bit above that 2.5 average rating. Details. Some details push it over that mark, and show the potential here.
As my complaint with some other movies, it does seem to relish being 'dark' a bit, too, to a fairly decent amount, which is an obnoxious trait among male writers/directors/artists who don't get their due because they're creating art and that shit is subjective and so many people want to do it, why should we care what they have to say when they could be ecologists or some ish instead? Of course, such a system creates such feelings, for sure, but by voicing my disapproval here, identifying the problem, hopefully we can find a way around this 'life is ugly, why don't you see this? I'm gonna make you see this' mentality when it serves no solution to the ugliness it proposes, and yada yada yada yada.
