Review of The Pirates! In an Adventure with Scientists! (2012) by Tyler S — 31 Aug 2012
Of course I'm stating the obvious right now but damn if this film isn't the exact opposite of what The Snowtown Murders was. And quite frankly this is exactly the type of movie to watch after The Snowtown Murders.
The best way I can describe this movie, and this might be a word that I use a lot in this review, is fun. It's a movie that never takes itself too seriously, even during the 'sad' moment, which every animated film in this world does, this movie does a musical montage in where the song that plays is a parody of the sad song that always play during these montages.
And it's a hilarious parody song, let me tell you right now. So even when the film has its serious moments, it never stops making you laugh. Realistically, there's never a dull moment in the film.
It's a consistent movie from beginning to end and they always find a way to entertain you. There's also a lot of minor details put into the movie itself. For example, one scene, the first time you see the Royal Society crest, I had to rewind because there was something written under the Royal Society crest that I couldn't read and, realistically, it's one of the funniest jokes in the entire film.
And it's something that if you're not paying attention to you will miss it entirely. I'm sure people who watched this in the theater missed this completely. There's also another scene, when they're handing out the trophies for best scientific discovery, the top three are in a podium and one of them and his discovery, which I'm not spoiling because it would ruin the joke, was hilarious.
And again it's something that you can miss if you're not even paying attention. There's also a lot of these moments involving Polly and jokes involving Charles Darwin that sort of allude to his accomplishments in the scientific realm.
I found this movie to be very funny and clever but it's the sort of comedy that actually ends up feeling more adult-oriented than actually aimed at kids. I'm sure the kids will enjoy the movie, but the funniest stuff ends up being the adult-oriented humor.
The writing is tremendous and so is the voice-acting. I found the voice-acting to be one of the highlights of the film because it just came across like the cast was having an absolute blast. I don't know how I can get that just from the voices, but it just seems like it was a lot of fun to do this movie.
So yea very little to complain about here. It's a top-notch animated film, with clever writing, lovable characters, great animation. It's got everything you can ask from an animated feature. This is the type of film that I'll gladly watch multiple times.
