Review of The Pirates! In an Adventure with Scientists! (2012) by Michael M — 20 Dec 2012
This is just totally my type of humor right here. Crazy, slapdash, fast-paced, over-the-top, slapstick, and profoundly silly. This is probably the silliest movie I've ever seen. It's very...well, very British, the sort of thing you might expect Monty Python to do in a way.
I've never been a big fan of claymation, but here it looks absolutely gorgeous. I've never really liked Wallace & Gromit, the creators of which were behind this, but this is so much better than anything they've done. And I've always hated Hugh Grant, but his comedic timing as the voice of Pirate Captain is absolutely perfect and I was laughing at almost every line that came out of his mouth!
The story is completely silly, involving a series of shenanigans including a dodo bird, Charles Darwin, Queen Victoria, and a pirate popularity contest, but you just go along with everything that happens because hey, why the hell not?
The sense of adventure is great, the comedy is fantastic, it's gorgeous to look at...I just f***ing love this movie so much it's almost like they made it just for me! One of (if not THE) funniest movies I've ever seen! Silly silly silly!
