Review of The Pirates! In an Adventure with Scientists! (2012) by Brett B — 20 Feb 2013
A really solid, all-around entertaining animated offering from Aardman Studios. As with most of their work, the film has a distinctly British sensibility that sets it apart from your typical animated (even stop motion) fare.
It's a charming movie, with some really outstanding sight gags that pair quite well with the more verbal-based humor, and there's an eager-to-please quality to the whole affair that is quite endearing.
What's more, the animation looks terrific (complete with some inventive action bits), the voice cast is energetic and colorful, and it plays with/subverts the iconography of pirate stories in a nifty fashion.
Most curious (in a good way) is that its storyline is not at all the sort of thing I was expecting the movie to really be; this is a great thing, as most so-called "family" movies tend to have a certain kind of plot template that this one basically tosses overboard (forgive me.
..) in favor of something more interesting. It's a lot of fun.
