Review of The Piano Teacher (2001) by Paul K — 22 Jul 2008
This goes up there as one of the most disturbing, unsettling, and repulsive pictures I've ever seen. I kept thinking of the Frech film Irreversible every time I felt a queasiness come on, except Irreversible was excellent, despite its repugnant nature, and this film was just work to sit through.
Do yourself a favor and avoid it, unless you are as masochistic as the main character. The only kudos I have to give go to Benoît Magimel for his excellent portrayal of a precocious innocent turned jaded, misogynist.
Other than that, the direction was self-indulgent and arty beyond forgiveness.
