Review of The Piano Teacher (2001) by Jared L — 19 Aug 2008
While Haneke's Funny Games is about the violence of sadistic serial killers, this film could be called Other Funny Games as it deals with masochistic sexual violence. Isabella Huppert portrays the frigid and stern lead character Erika who is in the strangle-hold of a mother she is unnaturally or undesirably close to.
Their proximity has produced an uncomfortable enmity rather than a loving relationship. Her world is changed when she finds a young paramour who is reluctant to sate her sexual appetite. Everything from thereon becomes a handbook for abusing the viewer a la Funny Games and fails to be very engaging, much like all of Haneke's films from The Seventh Continent and Benny's Video up to his recent remake.
