Review of The Piano Teacher (2001) by John W — 10 Nov 2008
A magnificent achievement. Haneke can extract more emotion from 20 seconds of dead silence and a stationary shot of Huppert's back to the camera than most directors can cram into an entire film. It's not always comfortable to watch but its remorselessly compelling nonetheless.
All the actors are superb but Huppert turns in the kind of performance that must make others want to give up and go home. If this is not the greatest living actress then please tell me who is?
