Review of The Piano Teacher (2001) by Margaux D — 05 Nov 2009
Haneke is a incredibly unique director; watching one of his films for the first time is an event because you know you'll be shocked and scarred. Le Pianiste is definitely shocking and scarring, but this time it's for a reason, and it's not just to provide a statement about voyuerism and violence like 'Funny Games.' This has an emotional core; horrifically flawed people who go to extreme lengths to satisfy their needs and get their revenge. I also love it's message about wanting something you can't really handle.
All of could think of the whole time was how much the film felt like an Angela from 'The Office' spin-off. Isabelle Huppert looks striking like a French Angela Kinsey, and her actions and subtleties mirrored that closeted accountant so well. Of course when the gratuitous Haneke-style horror-show began, I threw that out the window.
It's 'Secretary' without the humor, 'Funny Games' with a better message, and 'The Office' with a little rape & sadomasochsim. Enjoy!
