Review of The Piano Teacher (2001) by William N — 20 Mar 2011
A repressed teacher of piano replicates her humiliation at her mothers' hands in her secret life of S&M, peepshows etc, while sabotaging the career of a promising pupil. Frightening and repulsive at times, but quite brilliant.
While it departs from the Elfriede Jelinek text, in particular in the climactic scenes, and in presenting Erika rather more sympathetically than the novel does, it is horribly fascinating throughout and Isabelle Huppert is outstanding.
