Review of The Piano (1993) by Aaron W — 12 Mar 2009
Myeh... this is a toughie. elements of brilliance, moments of brilliance (loved the cinematography), but ultimately let down for me by not being allowed to sympathise with the protagonist. I was cursing at the screen for her to f*kn die already. Which I struggle with because I think Hunter's performance is very good on the whole. But not sure if it was her or the script or what... She was too much of a victim. She seemed to give in to her circumstances too easily. I would have liked a better justification for her not speaking. I was a bit like just bloody speak already, or do SOMETHING. Whereas normally I would totally identify with the pain of such a character. Would need to watch this again to pin down better what was wrong. Paquin a revelation.
Polar opposite reactions to this film from me.
