Review of The Piano (1993) by Elliott F — 22 Nov 2010
Jane Campion directed and scripted this fascinating character study about a mute woman who expresses her emotion through playing her piano. Holly Hunter stars as Ada McGrath, who hasn't spoken in years, and finds herself in an arranged marriage to a wealthy New Zealand plantation owner and must relocate to a new life in New Zealand with him and her daughter, Flora (Anna Paquin).
While there, she begins having an affair with a worker on the plantation (Harvey Keitel). The remainder of the film is a mellifluous, mesmerizing work of art. Holly Hunter and Anna Paquin both won Oscars for their deeply affecting performances, and Campion won the Palme d'Or from the Cannes Film Festival.
