Review of The Piano (1993) by Jane H — 03 Nov 2008
It is another iconic poster mother, daughter and piano alone on a vast New Zealand beach and behind it is a tragic tale of a mute Scottish woman and her daughter who are sent to marry a landowner in the wet, mud soaked New Zealand colonies.
For a woman with no voice, music is her only outlet and so when her husband decides to leave her piano on the beach she is suitably devastated. When a neighbour has the piano moved to his house, they enter into a strange arrangement in which she will give him piano lessons to earn it back, key by key.
The film unrolls into a passionate tale of love, lust and jealousy.
