The acting performances ranged from good to outstanding, the characters portrayed are intense and real. I could watch Anna Paquin here over and over, in my opinion she is the best child actress I have seen. Her character carries a broad range of emotions and expressions.

Holly Hunter delivers an exquisite performance, made all the more remarkable by without ever speaking a word throughout the film. Her silence veils a deeply passionate and willful nature. She speaks her mind through the music she plays. It is a siren's song and Harvey Keitel's character Baines hears it.

The cinematography is simply stunning with the usage of blue and grey hues contributed a right, depressive tone of the film.

The story by Jane Champion is highly original, though complex and disturbing but at the same time this story was very romantic in nature. Campion films with careful craftsmanship and detail except for the editing, it was as choppy and abrupt.
